Assignment 6 -- Scope a system, perform a logical design and a physical design
on a small part of that system.
The goal of this assignment is for you to produce a system design package
that you would be proud to show to a future employer and to the class during
the second last week of class. It is expected that your design package would
include:
- A System Context Diagram for the entire system (Figure 7-9)
- A high level Entity Relationship Diagram for the entire system (Figure
8-15)
- A detailed Data Model (Figure 8-16) for the part of the system you choose
to document in detail (Note: This can be omitted if it is very similar to
the physcial data mode produced later)
- A package of Process Diagrams (See Figure 9-13). The Decomposition Diagram
is required. The quantity of the other types of diagrams will depend on the
scope of your system and which parts of it you are expanding to the detail
level.
- A statement documenting the application architecture (what hardware and
systems software will be used and where will the data and processes be placed)
- A Network Architecture Diagram (Figure 13-11)
- Physical DFDs for a small part of the system (Figure 13-13).
- A physical data model corresponding to the detailed Data Model (Figure
14-9).
- A prototype of one process. This need not be elaborate and need not be
implemented in your chosen application architecture. It just needs to demonstrate
an understanding of the system design.
Note: The contents of the design package is negotiable up until the end of
class on the week after the Midterm Exam.
